Enterprise risk management

Enterprise risk management (ERM) is a management tool that encompasses the methods and processes used by organizations to manage risks related to the achievement of their objectives and protection of value. A typical ERM framework guides management on how to:

  1. identify particular adverse events or circumstances relevant to the organization’s performance and assets
  2. Assess the magnitude and likelihood of impact
  3. Determine a mitigation or response strategy
  4. Monitor exposures

By identifying and proactively addressing risks, enterprises can improve performance and protect and create value for stakeholders.

ERM may also be described as a risk-based approach to enterprise management that integrates strategic planning, operational, organizational and financial management, and internal control. ERM is evolving to address the needs of various stakeholders who want to understand the broad spectrum of risks facing complex organizations and how these risks are appropriately managed.
